Chapter 11

Leaving the diner with Maggie felt good, almost like old times again, and Taylor couldn’t help but smile. Life was so simple now that she’d come home.

Okay, not that simple. She did have to actually quit her job, for one thing. Get up the courage to call both Josh and her producers, and tell them once and for all that she was done. Who knew what Mike had told them after her impromptu firing? Considering Mike’s personality, Taylor wouldn’t put it past him to keep that conversation a secret or even outright lie about her intentions. She’d have to make another call and set everything straight. The sooner, the better.

Before that, she had to make sure she had a place to live. Todd would let her stay in the barn until he got another farmhand, something Taylor definitely wanted for him. She’d been enjoying pitching in on the farm, helping out with anything her brother needed. Seeing his reaction to the new stairs had been especially fulfilling. But she also knew her brother could never look past his own biases to consider taking her on as the full time farm hand. It’d be better to step aside and make room for the kind of person he wanted on the farm.

Besides, Taylor had a different job in mind for herself. She’d learned just how much visiting the VFW fulfilled her. It went beyond spending time with Maggie’s father, but he definitely had given her the catalyst she needed to figure out what was next in her life.

Russell hadn’t exactly had any sort of breakthrough, but Taylor knew they’d built a rapport. She loved talking to him and the guys, playing cards, and asking about their experiences. They seemed happy to talk to her and she wondered if one of the reasons Maggie felt she couldn’t talk with her dad was simply fear. Fear of asking him direct and honest questions about his deployment, and what he wanted out of life now.

Taylor already knew the answers and the fact that the rest of the Hartman family didn’t might be the problem. She could see that it wasn’t Russell who had a challenge to overcome. It was his wife and kids who needed to get past their uncertainty and realize this man was the same person he’d always been. He just so happened to be in a wheelchair now.

She’d done the same with Sugar, visiting the horse daily, feeding her treats, and chatting with her about random nonsense, and letting her know she was there as a friend, nothing more. Now the filly came to her as soon as Taylor entered the stable. No coaxing required.

The next steps in Taylor’s plan involved somehow getting Russell and Sugar together. Although she’d considered telling Maggie, she kept it to herself. Right now, her plan was still a work in progress. Horses were the easy part. People were harder. Taylor wasn’t a psychologist, but she figured the same principles she used on horses could apply to some folks.
